Jimmy Rushing – I Want A Little Girl

Little Jimmy Rushing

James Andrew Rushing (August 26, 1901– June 8, 1972), popularly known as Jimmy Rushing, was an American blues shouter and Swing Jazz singer from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. He is best known as the featured vocalist of Count Basie’s Orchestra from 1935 to 1948.

The song I Want a Little Girl was written by Murray Mencher and Billy Moll, and was first released by McKinney’s Cotton Pickers in 1930.  Jimmy Rushing’s rendition was done in 1958.

TFG invites you to watch the video below. Take note of Rushing’s body language throughout and the deliberateness of his delivery.  His modesty and humility dominate his immense talent, suggesting that he doesn’t deserve the girl he sings about.  It’s absolutely sweet.
